Fiona Mair, Learning Manager
Why did you want to work in Museums?
I wanted to do something that would use my history degree, and I didn't want to spend another 3 years at university doing a PhD - so a career in museums seemed the best option.
What's your favourite part of the job?
Working with lots of other creative people to come up with exciting ideas using our amazing collection. I think it's also important to preserve the past and teach others about it as knowing where we've come from helps us understand who we are now. Without knowledge of our history we exist in a void of ignorance without the power to improve ourselves and avoid making the same mistake twice. Plus, history is full of characters and stories that are more fantastical, funny and exciting than anything a novelist could write!
What's your favourite object?
I like too many things! My favourite painting is Les Pommiers a Damiette by Amand Guillaumin. The object that cheers me up most is Sara Walking by Julian Opie. And if I could have anything to keep it would the Gold Feather Necklace by Malcolm Appleby.
