Meredith Greiling, Curator
Why did you want to work in Museums?
I love visiting museums and it is a privilege to work in one. Each of us navigates our place in the world through our understanding of the past, both our own personal past and the past of places we live in and visit. It is also good to be reminded of the sacrifices and experiences of our ancestors; they can put our own lives into perspective and inspire us.
What's your favourite part of the job?
When someone brings in something exciting for the collection. Quite often I'll get a phone call that starts "I was going to throw this out, but I thought you might be interested in it..."
What's your favourite object?
It changes on a weekly basis, but this week it is a life raft that survived the Piper Alpha disaster and has been adrift in the North Sea for twenty years until being dragged up in a trawlerman's nets last month. It's a simple and powerful reminder of the disaster and the lives that were lost.
