Family Fun Sessions

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Family Fun Sessions throughout October!

There will be 4 activity days during the October half-term. We are looking for volunteers to support delivery of 2 of these days. Activities will be held at Aberdeen Maritime Museum. They are aimed families with children aged 3-12 years. Adults will stay with their children, and together they will get creative. All materials will be provided.

There will be two sessions running on each day.

• A morning session between 10.30am-12.30pm (families are required to book their free spaces)

• An afternoon session 1.30pm -3.30pm (this is a free drop-in session no booking required)

Tuesday 23: Wind & Rain
Come inside to make your own rainbow wind blower or a musical rain stick. We'll also have some weather related museum objects for you to explore.

Wednesday 24: Halloween fun
Get into the spirit of Halloween by making some spooky decorations to take home. We'll show you how to make bat headbands and magic wands.

If volunteers have Halloween accessories/fancy dress that they would like to wear this is encouraged!

• Tuesday 23 October
• Wednesday 24 October

Volunteering Times
Ideally we would like volunteers to volunteer for the full day on a given date: 9.45am-4pm.
However, if you can only manage a half day, that is great too!
Morning half day: 9.45am-1pm Afternoon half day: 1.15pm-4pm.
Please volunteer for as many days as you would like to/are available for.

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers (age 18+) to help us deliver this exciting October programme. As a volunteer you will also be there to help set up the workshop activities and then tidy up after the session finishes. Please volunteer for as many of the days/sessions as you would like or are able to manage. We will require a team of volunteers, and it would be great if volunteers were available for both dates.

Volunteering for the family fun programme is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a busy programme of cultural activity in Aberdeen. It provides a fun and sociable way to build your CV and gain experience in public engagement, working with children and creative workshop and event delivery. Volunteers will develop key skills including; team working, customer service and communication.

Volunteer Roles
Family fun volunteers need to have a friendly and approachable nature. Volunteers are the main point of contact for visitors; therefore, volunteers should be enthusiastic and helpful and have strong verbal communication skills. You should have an interest in working with primary aged children and their families. Events can be very busy; you should be willing to work in a fast paced and busy environment.

While it would be beneficial to have a creative skills set for some roles, volunteers do not have to have an art and design background. Activities are aimed at primary aged children; therefore, they are manageable for adults and volunteers who are not necessarily confident with hands-on arts and crafts.

Typical tasks include:

• Welcoming visitors as they arrive, providing information

• Explaining the activity / showing examples / encouraging participation

• Supporting families to create craft works or participle in games

• Keep working areas and materials tidy and organised

• Monitoring visitor numbers and enforcing a ticket holders only policy for ticketed events

• Encouraging visitors to leave feedback

• Setting up and tiding up activities

How to Apply
We ask that anyone interested in volunteering completes a volunteer enquiry form. On this form please tick all of the event dates and times that you are available to volunteer. Please then tell us the total number of days (full days and half days) that you are willing to volunteer. For example; you may tick that you are available for all dates, but that you only wish to volunteer for 1 full day and 1 half day in total. This provides us with the flexibility to allocate days according to volunteer availability and to cover our volunteer support needs.

To help ensure the programme is consistent and effective in its delivery, we encourage volunteers to volunteer for more than one day, and we ask that you only state your availability for days that you are certain that you are able to commit to.

Please complete the attached Volunteer Enquiry Form and return by Friday 12 October.

Volunteer Enquiry Form

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by Tuesday16 October.

Please note that we will try to allocate roles to those who apply, however, volunteer roles are limited and it may not be possible to accommodate everyone who applies.

Thank you for your interest in Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums. We look forward to hearing from potential volunteers.
