Provost Skene's House

14/04/2012 - 30/06/2012

Beadwork, embroidery, lace and other forms of embellishment have been applied to costumes and accessories since ancient times.

While some of these techniques were reserved for formal occasion-wear, less elaborate forms of decoration can be found on day-wear and even sleep-wear. Embellished features garments and accessories from the permanent collection, which illustrate the use of decoration in fashion from the 19th century to the present day. Highlights include a fully sequinned evening dress by Frank Usher and a heavily beaded Edwardian house coat.
