'First There is a Mountain' is a new participatory artwork choreographed by Katie Paterson over British Summer Time 2019. Paterson has created a set of buckets in the form of world mountains, which we will use to build sand mountain ranges across Aberdeen Beach. The buckets are specially created scale models of five of the world’s most famous mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (North America), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe), and Uluru (Oceania). The project poetically connects these mountains to the smallest grains of sand, with each mountain formed and eroded within the cycle of a day.

Maria Fusco, Professor of Fine Art at Northumbria University, has created a text to accompany the work in Aberdeen, which will be read aloud in both English and Doric at 2.30pm.

Fifty sets of buckets and spades will be available on the day.
