Dame Elizabeth Blackadder

Artist:Dame Elizabeth Blackadder
Falkirk, Scotland, born 1931

watercolour on paper

Elizabeth Blackadder is today regarded as one of Scotland's most important artists and is the only woman to be a fully elected member of both The Royal Academy and The Royal Scottish Academy. In her eightieth year, she is also an active member of The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour.

Blackadder's paintings are based on a very large collection of all kinds of objects - toys, boxes, ribbons, fans, pieces of paper, scraps of cloth, flowers, and stones - a selection of which she arranges on a table, in the traditional manner. These still life paintings are deliberately ornamental. All sense of perspective is intentionally lost by tipping the table up at an angle and eliminating any background.
