Two Girls

Two Girls , c. 1920

James Cowie

Artist:James Cowie
Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1886 - 1956

watercolour on paper

Scottish painter James Cowie taught at several Scottish art institutions where he instructed students such as Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Joan Eardley. His oil paintings were executed in a strong, linear style and required extensive preliminary studies, taking several years to complete.

In contrast, this watercolour, which is an early work, has a delicacy and spontaneity dictated by the watercolour medium. It depicts two girls in the art room at Bellshill Academy where Cowie was art master.

Purchased in 1978.
