Kate Gillespie, Curator
Why did you want to work in Museums?
I have always had an interest in art and culture and after originally going to university to study Psychology I soon realised that a career in the arts was the route for me. Having visited many museums and galleries as a child I was fascinated by the wealth of beautiful objects and art. The opportunity to be surrounded by such wonderful things and to interpret them for the public to enjoy was my motivation for working in a museum.
What's your favourite part of the job?
I always look forward to installing an exhibition I have curated. Discovering the ways in which different objects interact with each other and finding solutions to display problems is incredibly satisfying.
What's your favourite object?
There are so many treasures in the collection it is hard to pick just one, but Junko Mori's Silver Organism is technically brilliant and full of character. It is a great example of the ways in which contemporary makers are pushing their material to new limits and redefining the stereotypes associated with decorative art.
