New Year clear outs may be of interest to museums

5 January 2012

A free lunchtime talk that will look at some of the recent acquisitions to the social and industrial history collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums will be held at 12.30pm on Wednesday 11 January at Provost Skene’s House, Guestrow, Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum’s curator [industry] Jenny Brown will explain how curators decide which objects to collect and will reveal some recent acquisitions from 2011 including fascinating photographs of Robert Gibb and Sons’ Excelsior Granite Works, an original oil painting for the Royal Deeside railway posters and a humble local laundry box.

Curator Jenny Brown said: “We collect a wide range of material on local history – and though we can’t take everything, it’s always good to hear from people. You never know when the next star object will turn up.”

Advance booking is essential by telephoning Provost Skene’s House on (01224) 641086.
