Creative sessions to inspire next generation of artists

29 October 2013

BP Portrait Award: Next Generation, which looks to creatively engage young people aged 14-19 years old with portraiture, through the BP Portrait Award, returns to Aberdeen Art Gallery next month [November 2013].

BP Portrait Award: Next Generation encourages young artists aged 14-19 years old, from first-time gallery visitors to those who want to make art their career, by connecting them with other young people interested in portraiture and past BP Portrait Award winning artists.

Aspiring young artists are invited to take part in free creative sessions at Aberdeen Art Gallery where participants will generate their own body of portraiture work through a range of artist-led activities, demonstrations and presentations and by viewing and responding creatively to the BP Portrait Award 2013.

For those new to portraiture, the exciting free BP Portrait Award: Next Generation taster sessions are ideal. Young artists are supported in experimenting with a range of portraiture techniques in the gallery spaces, under the guidance of former BP Portrait Award exhibitor Kelly-Anne Cairns.

In addition to these taster sessions Aberdeen Art Gallery is also offering a two-day free BP Portrait Award: Next Generation Winter School which will offer budding artists an in-depth opportunity to explore and develop their artistic potential by working with professional artists, including a past BP Portrait Award winner. Exciting hands-on opportunities to experiment with portraiture through gallery work, life drawing and painting will enable young artists to produce their very own painted masterpiece.

Tim Smith, Vice President Communications & External Affairs BP, said: "We are delighted to be working with Aberdeen Art Gallery once again to offer this exciting project. I am confident that this unique opportunity to work with artists and the gallery's education team will be a thought provoking and valuable experience for the young people who participate."

Christine Rew, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums manager, added: "The BP Next Generation sessions offer fantastic opportunities for young people to engage directly with the outstanding portraits on display in the BP Portrait Award 2013 exhibition. Those who take part in the sessions will benefit from expert guidance and support to develop the skills and confidence to create their own portraiture masterpieces. The BP Next Generation sessions may even inspire a future star of the ever popular BP Portrait Award."
