Nursing Badges

Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums' Collections contain over 100 nursing badges. These badges became very popular during the mid to late 19th century, when the training of nurses took on a new respectability. The badge was a means to visibly demonstrate competence and training to the patient, your peers and the public. At the same time it is imbued with professional pride. Aberdeen's collection includes many local badges, often earned and worn by nurses born and trained in North East Scotland.
