Celebrate 125 Years of Aberdeen Art Gallery

04/09/2010 - 13/11/2010

This exhibition celebrates the 125th anniversary of Aberdeen Art Gallery and shows a selection of the most significant items in the collections.

Fine and Decorative Art, Archaeology and objects from the Industrial, Maritime and Scientific collections reflect the initial concept of an Art Gallery and Industrial Museum. The exhibition also looks at the different ways in which these rich and varied artworks and objects were acquired over the years. Included in the display is an early Italian painting, newly rediscovered as a work by the Italian Renaissance master Vecchietta (1410-1480). In addition, superbly preserved medieval artefacts from city archaeological excavations are displayed in the city for the very first time.

This anniversary show will be accompanied by the publication of a new book by Lead Curator Jennifer Melville, 'Aberdeen Art Gallery - A History'. The exhibition and book are supported by the Friends of Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums and Vibrant Aberdeen.
